The war-ridden and independent country of East Timor, only became fully recognised in 2002 by the UN. They were celebrating 20 years of independence when I visited. Pre-pandemic it was possible to fly into Dili cheaply from Bali (1 hours flight). This had all changed now due to the Pandemic. With very few flights and far between the dates, I opted to fly into Kupang in western Timor, part of Indonesia. I then took a minibus from Kupang to Dili which took some 10 hours. I did get to see a lot of the country, which i otherwise would have missed.
