Suriname - former dutch colony - was the first stop on this trip. The capital, Paramaribo, was a positive surprise with all the period dutch architecture. There was a huge fire in the mid 19th century which all but wiped out the city center. Most of wooden architecture and construction are from around the turn of the last century (1900). There is also a magnificent old fort named Zeelandia worth visiting. After having spent time at the capital we traveled overland south crossing the river-border into French Guyana.
