Syria

Back in 1984, when I worked for a short period in Cairo, Egypt, a trip was made to Syria when Hafez Al-Assad, the father of Bashar Al-Assad was still in power. Roaming around the old parts of Damascus including the old souk and the UNESCO world heritage certified Omayyad mosque was magnificent. A visit to Syria is not complete without stopping at the Palmyria (Tadmor) also this UNESCO heritage. This amazing Palmyrene empire dating back to 2000 years BC is located some 200 km north-east of Damascus has been partly destroyed by ISIS in there efforts of eradicating many of the historical sites and architecture in Syria.
